Top of the Tree in Gold Level Environmental Accolade
During a visit to London’s Houses of Parliament earlier this week, Seddons Plant & Engineers Ltd was rated top of the tree at a prestigious environmental awards ceremony recognising Britain’s greenest organisations.
We won the Gold Level Green Apple Environmental Award for Best Practice for the introduction of the Green Rhino® EnviroPad, a revolutionary form of drip tray which allows organisations to use or store plant, tools or refuelling containers whilst preventing the leakage of hazardous fluids such as oil, diesel or petrol into the environment.
The EnviroPad won the highest accolade in the ‘Pollution Prevention’ category for the Green Apple Environmental Award for Best Practice. We were notified that we had won a Green Apple Award back in August of this year, but only found out the level of award at the official ceremony at The Houses of Parliament this week. We competed against more than 500 other nominations in the Green Apple Environmental Awards for Best Practice.
Stephen Seddon, Managing Director of Seddons Plant & Engineers Ltd, said: “It was a real honour to go to the Houses of Parliament to collect the accolade and we were absolutely delighted to receive the Gold Level Award. It is fantastic that we have been recognised as a forward-thinking organisation and this is the second accolade that the EnviroPad has won in the last month, having won the North West Green Hero Environmental Innovation Award in October.”
Seddons Plant & Engineers Ltd has developed the Green Rhino® EnviroPad in conjunction with Capture Green Environmental Solutions. The EnviroPad encapsulates drips and spills arising from leaking plant and refuelling activities. Placed directly underneath plant and other equipment, it contains a smart membrane with sophisticated polymer technology inside that captures and retains hydrocarbons such as oil, diesel and petrol. Hydrocarbons are transformed into a dry, rubber-like solid within minutes, preventing the release of contaminated water or hazardous fluids into the workplace or local environment.
The EnviroPad can help companies to avoid prosecution and heavy environmental fines for contaminated ground water. This is a significant problem in the construction industry as in a single month in one year, the Environment Agency prosecuted UK companies for pollution and environmental crime, resulting in fines totalling over £800,000 and additional legal costs for those companies totalling more than £170,000.
The Green Apple Awards began in 1994 and have become established as the country’s major recognition programme for environmental endeavour amongst companies, councils, communities and countries, having previously been won by leading organisations such as Heathrow Airport, Kier Construction, Laing O’Rourke and ASDA.
As a result of our Green Apple Award success, we have been invited to have the company’s winning paper published in The Green Book, the leading international work of reference on environmental best practice, so that others around the world can follow our example and learn from our achievement.
The awards are organised by The Green Organisation, an independent, non-political, non-activist, non-profit environment group dedicated to recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice around the world. The awards are supported by the Environment Agency, the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, the Chartered Institution for Wastes Management and other independent bodies.
